Brief

Located at Kings Cross Paddington Basin, also known as St Pancras Yacht Basin, the project establishes a dedicated hub for an experimental film club. It provides flexible spaces and rentable equipment for independent filmmakers to create, develop, and showcase their work both publicly and privately, while also serving as a social forum for debating the future of experimental film practice.

The design process draws inspiration from Everything Everywhere All at Once, studying the film’s use of layered narratives, shifting viewpoints, and playful spatial logic to inform how the project frames movement, experience, and storytelling within the site.

Part 1

Pavilion – Magic Lantern

The chosen film, Everything Everywhere All at Once, explores metaphysics, nostalgia, and the danger of taking life so seriously that we lose ourselves, ideas that shaped how I approached the site at Kings Cross, where mixed feelings about redevelopment echo that same tension between change and identity.

By studying the film’s shifting red‑and‑blue tones and the character’s emotional evolution, I translated those dynamics into my design through a collage that moves from cold to warm, using set‑study drawings to express how the area—like life—is constantly changing while still holding onto what it once was.

The Everything Bagel

This proposal uses movement, framing, and layered spatial cues to translate the constant shifts of life and the site into an experiential narrative. Coloured windows, changing viewpoints, and water‑led motion create a sequence that reveals itself gradually, offering moments of clarity, comfort, and reflection within the film club environment.

Playful elements like the ‘Hot Dog Fingers’ viewpoint and the everything‑bagel retreat introduce spaces for pause and escape, while architectural references such as the Coal Drops Yard arches guide visitors through a journey that feels chaotic at first but ultimately settles into coherence as they inhabit it.
